What is a Gastric/Lap Band?

A Gastric/Lap band is fitted around the top part of your stomach by using keyhole surgery, on the inside of the Band there is an inflatable membrane, once the band is in place it is then connected to an excess port, by using a fine needle, a saline solution is injected into the collar of the band, as the band expands this creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach with a small opening between the upper part and lower part of the stomach called a Stoma .

This upper pouch holds approximately ½ cup of food, whereas the typical stomach holds about 6 cups of food. The upper pouch fills with food quickly, and the Stoma slows the passage of food from the upper pouch to the lower part of the stomach. As the upper part of the stomach registers as being full, the message to the brain is that the entire stomach is now full, and this sensation helps the person to feel full more quickly and for a longer period of time, to eat smaller portions, be hungry less often, and so therefore lose weight over time.
As people lose weight, their body starts to shrink, and so the Gastric/Lap band will need to be adjusted to ensure comfort and effectiveness. The gastric/Lap band is adjusted by using a fine needle to add more saline solution into a small access port placed on the muscle wall just under the skin.

What are the risks of Gastric Banding?
