Myths and Misconceptions Regarding Hypnosis

One of the most common Myths is that you are in a “sleep like trance”, this cannot be further from the truth, in Hypnosis you are NOT asleep, you are NOT unconscious, you ARE completely aware at all times of what is happening all around you.

You cannot be forced into Hypnosis nor can you be made to do anything you do not want to do.

Another Myth is that a Hypnotist can control you and that you have to hand over all your control to the Hypnotist, this is simply NOT TRUE the only person in control at ALL TIMES is YOU, YOU ARE completely in CONTROL at ALL TIMES

Hypnosis does not involve putting you into a deep trance like state.

You will not be asked to ‘cluck like a chicken’ or pretend with a broom that you are riding a horse or any other embarrassing thing that you may have seen on a stage show these people do these things because they want to.

Hypnosis has been around for centuries, it is a wonderful quiet way to help and heal.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS

Within science, there is no debate as to whether hypnosis exists or works. Science simply cannot agree on what it is and how it works, although The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:

“In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist.”

These suggestions can help people make positive changes within themselves.

Long gone are the days when hypnosis was seen as waving watches and controlling people’s minds.

In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do anything you do not want to do.

It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis.

A hypnotherapist merely helps to facilitate your experience, it is about empowerment and helping you in achieving your goals.

If someone tells you they can “hypnotise” you to do absolutely anything then ask them to hypnotise you to rob a bank,

and when they can’t, you can tell them to stop making such ridiculous claims!

Hypnosis is a simple way of relaxing and focusing your mind.

When hypnotised, a person is in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating on the Hypnotherapist’s voice.

It is just like those moments when you are just about to go to sleep, but you are still aware of everything that is happening around you.

When you are in this relaxed state, the Hypnotherapist can suggest concepts and lifestyle adaptations to you and this will allow your subconscious to decide if these ideas and changes could be useful to you.

These thoughts once accepted can be very powerful for helping with Fears, Phobias, Stopping Smoking, Weight Loss, Confidence Building and Stress related problems to name but a few!

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?

The therapist will take the time to talk to you and find out as much as possible about the changes you want to make.

When you are ready the therapist will ask you to get into a comfortable position and then ask you to close your eyes, this is to help you focus your mind inwards and help you with your imagination.

The therapist will then begin to help you to achieve a relaxed state, and at this point the therapist will help you to make those changes at a subconscious level that you are looking for.

When the session is over the therapist will return you back to your normal wakeful awareness, where you will feel comfortable and relaxed.
